What is an antiframe and why is it needed?

An antiframe (frameless frame, “frame without a frame,” “photo frame without a frame”) is a frame without an external decorative molding. The image is secured between a transparent panel and an MDF backing using metal clips. No profile around the perimeter — just glass, the image, and the wall. That’s why this format is also called “photo under glass without a frame” — all attention is focused on the image. This format is suitable for photos, posters, prints, diplomas, certificates, menus, exhibition works, and children’s drawings.

The main advantage of the design is quick content replacement. Remove the clips, change the image, and put it back. No tools, no effort. For this reason, antiframes are often chosen for advertising, seasonal decor, and spaces with frequent content rotation.

Sizes: standard and custom

Which glass to choose: comparison of 7 options

The type of front panel directly affects how the image looks and how well it is protected.

Glossy PET plastic — lightweight, shatterproof. Suitable for large formats and high-traffic areas.
Regular glass — high transparency, accurate color reproduction. A frameless glass frame is the optimal choice for photos and artwork in calm environments.
Anti-reflective glass — eliminates glare from light sources. Ideal for offices, hallways, and display areas with direct lighting.
Glossy acrylic 1.5–2 mm — lighter than glass, highly impact-resistant, does not shatter. Especially suitable for large formats.

Glossy acrylic 3 mm — strong yet lightweight, significantly lighter than standard glass. Ideal for very large frames.

Mat in an antiframe: when is it needed?

A mat is a cardboard insert between the image and the glass. It serves several functions: prevents the photo from touching the glass, creates a neat border around the image, and visually elevates the artwork. This is especially noticeable with photographs, diplomas, and artwork. If the image is smaller than the frame, a mat also helps properly fill the space.

Where are antiframes used?

Antiframes are used in residential interiors, offices, cafes, restaurants, schools, medical offices, galleries, and exhibition stands. What materials are frameless frames made of?

Which is better — glass or plastic glazing?

How do you care for a frameless frame?

To keep a frameless frame looking neat, simply wipe it from time to time with a soft microfiber cloth. If needed, you can use a gentle glass cleaner. It is best to spray the cleaner onto the cloth first so that excess moisture does not get under the front panel and the image inside the frame remains protected. For plastic panels (PET or acrylic), it is recommended to use mild cleaning products and soft cloths to keep the surface clear and free from scratches.

How is a frameless frame different from a regular frame?

The main difference is the absence of a decorative moulding. Because of this, all the attention is focused on the image itself. Frameless frames have a minimalist look and fit well in many modern interiors.
Is it easy to change the image in a frameless frame?

Yes. Simply remove the metal clips, take out the backing board, replace the image, and secure the clips again. The whole process takes just a couple of minutes.
Can a frameless frame be used for displaying puzzles?

Technically, yes, and some people do it. However, professional framers generally do not recommend this. The reason is both practical and visual. A completed puzzle rarely has perfectly straight edges, which are needed for a frameless frame. Over time, the situation usually becomes worse: the edges of the puzzle are exposed to air, and changes in humidity and temperature can cause the cardboard pieces to warp. The edges may lift and the surface can become uneven. A puzzle that looked relatively flat when framed may become noticeably wavy under the glass after a few months. Why are frameless frames better than regular photo frames?

The main advantage of frameless frames is their visual lightness. There is no moulding around the edges and no borders. On the wall, you see only the photograph itself — it is not weighed down by a frame or confined within a “window,” but appears almost as if it is simply floating on the wall. This is especially noticeable when displaying several works in a gallery-style arrangement. Frameless frames do not compete with the image and do not visually clutter the wall — they are almost invisible. A traditional frame adds visual weight. Sometimes this is appropriate: for example, for a classic portrait, an oil reproduction, or a family photo in a living room. But for posters, contemporary graphics, and minimalist interiors, frameless frames often feel like the more natural choice.
Can a frameless frame be placed on a table, or is it only for wall mounting?

Frameless frames are primarily designed for wall mounting, and they do not come with a built-in stand. However, tabletop display is still possible. Professional framers sometimes use metal easel stands (easel backs) that can be attached to the backing board. These stands can be purchased separately, although we unfortunately do not sell them. We generally recommend wall mounting, as we believe frameless frames look best on the wall — but of course, there are always exceptions.
Do frameless frames come with hanging hardware, or do I need to buy it separately?

The hanging hardware is already installed — there is no need to buy anything extra or drill additional holes. We attach the hanging loops to the backing board in advance, both horizontally and vertically. You simply choose the orientation you want and hang the frame on the wall — it is ready to install straight out of the package.
How secure are the metal clips? Do they loosen over time?

They are very secure, and time is not really a problem for them. At first glance the clips may look small or delicate, but this impression is misleading. Once we came across a frameless frame that had been stored for many years in a damp garage. The backing board had swollen and the glass had developed a mineral film that made it cloudy — yet the clips were still in perfect working condition. They had a bit of surface rust on the outside, but they continued to hold everything firmly. Metal does not easily lose its elasticity or strength. In practice, the clips usually outlast all the other parts of the frameless frame — the glass can break and the backing board can get damaged, but the clips will still work even after everything else is replaced.
Can a frameless frame be hung without drilling — using double-sided tape or adhesive hooks?

Attaching tape or adhesive strips directly to the back of a frameless frame usually will not work. The metal clips on the back stick out slightly, preventing the frame from sitting completely flush against the wall. There will typically be a gap of about 3–4 mm between the wall and the back panel. However, there is an easy no-drilling solution: use a wall hook with double-sided adhesive. The hook sticks to the wall, and the frameless frame hangs on it using the installed hanger. This keeps the wall intact while allowing the frame to hang securely.
